Although spring, summer and fall are often a nature photographer’s default when it comes to capturing wildlife, artist Rachel Hall says that winter offers its own unexpected abundance. Her photo series, Faces of Winter, examines the quiet dramas and surprising bursts of color that Minnesota’s chilliest season supplies. “These images—captured throughout the coldest months from early freeze to the final minutes before this year’s official spring—reveal the creatures who endure, adapt and return with the shifting ice,” she says.
Faces of Winter is on display at the Maple Grove Government Center, now through December as part of the Maple Grove Arts Center’s Business of Art program. “Some of the portraits feature steadfast residents who remain all winter long,” Hall says. “Others highlight migrators who linger as long as open water allows, choosing to stay through late freeze and early thaw.” Overall, she says the series highlights how even the harshest months can set the stage for stories of endurance and resilience.
